We’ve been going through it since our last update. Lots of trauma not even related to horrific election results and change of administration that, as I type this, happens tomorrow.
First, the bad news. We were already late in updating the site to be “open” for submissions/queries (more on that in a sec) and in finishing Elizabeth Shvarts’ chapbook (Soft Animals) for publication/release (ditto), so we glided through the Holidays in a post-election stupor. (It seemed easier at the time.) The “plan,” then, was to re-engage around the New Year. Now before all this, my personal laptop had died suddenly. Luckily, I didn’t have anything important stored on it. But I did use that laptop for press-related communication and updates to the website. So, back to the New Year, when my flash drive started giving me access errors. I was slow to respond and when I finally started rescuing files from it, I lost all access. This drive had all press-related files, as well as lots of personal files and every poem I’d typed up for at least 15 years (including multiple ongoing projects). I went through most of the five stages of grief while I consulted with a couple data-recovery services. And then I opted to try a paid data-recovery program, which had mixed results. It basically recovered a lot of older files that matched what I’d been able to “rescue” myself. The stuff I “lost” was most of the stuff from the last five years or so. I have proofs and covers in the GBP email (as they’d been sent to authors), but I can’t print from the proofs as they exist; I’d have to recreate them in Publisher . . . which I’m not jazzed about doing. In a pinch, I can disassemble a printed copy (if I have one), scan/save the pages, and reprint from the scan. Not ideal, but I’ve done it. Anyway, I’m still going through files and seeing what copies I have on hand. For some titles, I have several printed copies, and this won’t be an issue. But some of the more “popular” titles didn’t sit around long enough to gather stock, so I might not have anything on hand. New laptop, new flash drive, more duplication/redundancy.
Anyway . . . onward and upward. We’ve update the Submissions page to show that we’re open for queries (first) until around February 14. Check that page for details, and let us know if you have questions.
And Elizabeth’s chapbook, after many stops and starts, is finally ready for publication around the end of the month. There probably won’t be another “warning” update; it’ll likely just appear. We’re excited that this collection is finally going to be out in the world.
